Highlights include visits to El Yunque Rainforest, local beaches, Old San Juan, and local estates. This close-knit village is comprised of relocated families that are re-building their homes and are thrilled to have students come join them in work. So Monday brings the transition from Team Two to Team Three. Practice Spanish and learn about local customs while working alongside welcoming community members in need. We spend the next five days fixing up homes, working on education projects with local kids, and sharing home cooked meals and laughs with community members.
The current state that Puerto Rico is in has certainly gained national attention, but not enough assistance from the United States. The road to recovery will be long but we will be with our partners throughout this journey. In all, 30 balloons will be deployed, hovering about 20 kilometers in the stratosphere above the Earth. Participants also meet with and advocate next to local workers and activists for environmental improvements. I particularly remember the study of three special days: All Hallows Eve, All Saints Day and All Souls Day. In the afternoons, go snorkeling, kayak in the calm waters of Laguna Tortuguero, or relax on the sand and in the water at Playa La Esperanza.

AmeriCorps Last year, more than 700 AmeriCorps members met pressing local needs across Puerto Rico, making a lasting impact in communities while gaining valuable skills and experience to advance their careers. This occured while the island's economic crisis was entering its peak, increasing unemployment, closing schools, and affecting the public health system. That opportunity did not begin four weeks ago, but started with the decision to serve in Puerto Rico more than a decade ago.
This project will improve the safety and operations of all the intersections of Caparra and will benefit more than five hundred thousand users. Puerto Rico was badly damaged by Hurricane Maria. It was an eye-opening experience for our volunteers to see the intensity of need by the elderly, the disabled and families with young children, often with a head of household who was disabled. Thanks to all the team members for your service on the island and many thanks to all the 16,000 Volunteers of America family members, donors and corporations who have supported the Puerto Rico recovery efforts. The pledges follow dozens of others made last year in previous conferences that include rebuilding schools, distributing solar lanterns and providing medical care and equipment. In addition, the P3A intends to issue requests for proposals in October, inviting the shortlisted consortia to submit specific proposals for the energy storage system and the transformation of the ferry system for the island municipalities, Cataño and San Juan.
A future Volunteers of America Project Esperanza team will return to this complex to assist with some specialty items for those households that the team assessed. Read on below for weekly shift updates. Delivering the items sorted to those who need them most will be first on the list of tasks. This facility is a 14-story building housing more than 240 elderly and disabled individuals. In these last four weeks, I have had an upfront look at the face of Volunteers of America and I can say I am assured more than ever that our organization will last the next 120 years. There were no complaints, only smiles and words of thanks.
