MENTOR TRAINING
For All Potential Mentors of Cadets
Thank you for your interest in mentoring a cadet at Fort Gordon Youth ChalleNGe Academy. The following information will help clarify our expectations of mentors and help you determine whether this is something to which you are willing to commit.
The following are mentor requirements that must be met for your cadet to remain enrolled in Youth ChalleNGe and graduate.
All mentors must attend training on one of these dates:
- August 8, beginning at 1:00 at Fort Stewart, GA Building 15*
- August 9, beginning at 1:00 at Fort Stewart, GA, Building 15*
- August 22, beginning at 1:00 at Fort Stewart, GA, Building 15*
- August 23, beginning at 1:00 at Fort Stewart, GA, Building 15*
- September 5, beginning at 1:00 at Fort Stewart, GA, Building 15*

- December 6, beginning at 12:00 at Darling Hall, Room 138.
You may attend any of the training sessions at Fort Stewart. Be sure to tell them you are mentoring a cadet at Fort Gordon so that they may forward the information to us.
In addition to the training, must attend Mentor Day and the Matching Ceremony to be held on December 22nd, from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m., on the Academy Campus.
Be actively involved with helping the cadets establish their Post-Residential Action Plan.
Contact the cadet while he/she is enrolled in the program at least once each week by phone, mail, or in person.
Assist the cadet in obtaining post-residential placement prior to graduation.
Upon graduation, maintain contact with your cadet four times per month for the following twelve months.
Send monthly reports detailing these contacts and the cadet's placement to the Post-Residential Staff by the end of each month.
Mentors are required to have as much contact with their cadets as possible via letters, faxes, phone calls or any other means of communication. The goal is to establish or maintain a trusting relationship between you and your cadet. That way, when the cadet begins the post-residential phase of Youth ChalleNGe you will be able to support, encourage, and motivate him or her in making sound decisions.
You are also encouraged to do some pre-training on the web. You can go to Online Training from the National Mentoring Partnership and take the on-line mentoring course there. At the end of that training you are encouraged to email the last page to us so that we can credit you with the pre-training. There is also a very good workbook that you can download and use with your cadet to guide you along. This training is not required nor is it a prerequisite for participation in our program. It is a very good resource for you.
After reviewing this information, if you find you cannot meet the mentor requirements, please inform the person you were going to mentor so they can find another mentor quickly. If you have any questions, please call
Mrs. Shirley Howard (706) 823-9274
Mr. Edward Henderson (706) 823-9272
We look forward to working with you during the next seventeen months.
