Counseling Department
The Counseling Department at YCA provides personal, academic and career counseling in the form of individual and group therapy. The department is focused on assisting young candiate on how to be successful at YCA along with life making life changes that will enhance their future. Goal Setting, Vocational Exploration and Career Planning are specific areas of focus. Each cadet is assigned a counselor who will help with all of their needs. The counselor-to-cadet ratio is approximately 35-40 cadets per counselor, which is much lower than the average high school. Counselors work closely with instructors, Cadre and other staff members to enhance each cadet's experience. They assist cadets in successful completion of the program to the accomplishment of short-term goals and the realization of long-term goals.
Dining Facility
At Youth Challenge the cadets participate in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). The NSLP Act was passed by Congress in 1946 as a measure of national security to safeguard the health and well-being of the nation's children, and to insure a physically fit citizenry should citizens be needed for national defense in a future crisis.
The YouthChallengeAcademy is a well-structured organization that helps cadets improve their lives in many ways, including improvement through nutritional education. The aim is to produce citizens with healthy minds, bodies, and spirits. As cadets, their caloric count is monitored as well as the fats, saturated fats, and sodium intakes. Cadets are continuously receiving encouragement to change their eating habits by learning to eat more nutritional foods, thus avoiding further health problems.
Our cadets will have taken the "challenge" and will be prepared to live and function normally in society, while maintaining a healthy nutritional lifestyle and a positive attitude. These changes will encourage them to believe that they have the ability to accomplish all things.
