The Michigan Youth ChalleNGe Academy (MYCA) will be closing its doors forever on 26 December 2009 unless the state legislature restores 100% funding in the current fiscal year. Current funding will not allow us to start our next class on January 3, 2010. Our funding shortfall is approximately $700,000.00. We have a very short window for legislators or donations to restore 100% funding to the ChalleNGe Program.
If adequate funding is received you will be notified of the next MYCA class.
Please read the following prior to filling out the Pre-Application & printing the application packet.
1. Be sure to fill out an online Pre-Application! Once you submit the pre-application, you will be prompted to a page that will allow you to print the complete application packet. (application packet includes 1 cadet application & 2 mentor applications).
2. Applicants MUST attend a SEMINAR. We have 2 more available for the upcoming January 2010 cycle!

Applicant Notice:
The upcoming cycle will begin in early January, 2010. All applicants MUST be 16,17, 18, or 19 years of age on or before the start date or they are otherwise ineligible for the cycle.
NOTE: 19 year-olds MUST still be 19 on or before the projected graduation date, otherwise, they are ineligible for application.

(Note: Application to the MYCA is not a guarantee for acceptance. The MYCA can only select approximately 140-150 applicants per cycle).
Every applicant must meet requirements #1-6 to be considered for the Michigan Youth ChalleNGe Academy. Meeting these requirements does not guarantee that you will be accepted. If you do not meet these requirements, acceptance is not possible.
1. Each applicant and one parent/guardian must attend an Eligibility Seminar. This seminar includes a presentation, question/answer session, and an applicant interview. Information is provided so each applicant and parent/guardian can decide if MYCA is the right choice for them.
2. An Open House (a tour of the MYCA) will be held on the grounds of the MYCA. This is only for applicants who have attended a Seminar & turned in their application by the deadline.
3. A Complete Cadet Application. ALL forms must be filled out, initialed, signed, etc. EVERY form has a purpose, even if you don't think a form applies to you.
4. Clear, legible COPIES of the following documents must be submitted with your application packet:
- Applicant birth certificate
- Applicant social security card
- Applicant State of Michigan picture ID. (High school ID is not acceptable)
- Parent/guardian drivers license
- Medical insurance card, front and back sides (if you have insurance)
- Current immunization records
- School transcript
- Individual Education Plan (IEP) for special education needs (if apply)
5. Two (2) completed mentor applications. Pages filled in, signatures are required. Mentors must be the same gender as the youth, 21 and older, and not a relative of the applicant. You may seek out friends, teachers, church members or community members to find these mentors.
Other tips for finding a Mentor
- 2 completed Mentor Reference Response forms for each mentor applicant. These are to be filled in by a mentor applicant's friend, co-worker, etc. evaluating the mentor prospect.
6. All paperwork must be received at MYCA no later than the deadline. Applications may be brought to your scheduled seminar, mailed, or faxed.
7. Acceptance & Non-acceptance letters will be mailed no less than 30 days prior to the class start date.
