Job Desription of a Mentor

Position Summary

The mentor serves as a role model, friend and advocate to a corpsmember for at least 18 months.

Working Relationships

• Reports to Case Manager
 
• Mentors corpsmember

Duties and Responsibilities

• Commits to spending at least 18 months in consistent contact with a corpsmember.
 
• Returns completed screening materials promptly.
 
• Attends academy sponsored training to learn how to relate effectively to corpsmembers.
 
• Assists the corpsmember with the Life Plan development and discusses his or her progress in that Plan.
 
• Makes consistent contact with the corpsmember by phone, mail, or in person. Four contacts per month are required. At least two of these must be face to face during the Post-residential Phase.
 
• Observes all Program policies and guidelines for mentors. Discusses violations of policies by corpsmembers with the Post-Residential Assistant.
 
• Refers the corpsmember to community resources as needed and helps the corpsmember obtain those resources.
 
• Participates in off-site visits, visits ChalleNGe sites, and takes part in relevant activities.
 
• Shares occasional, informal and fun activities with his or her corpsmember. The mentor and corpsmember will jointly select and schedule the activities.
 
• Communicates at least monthly by phone or mail with the Case Manager. The mentor promptly informs the Case Manager of problems or needs in the corpsmember's life or in their relationship.
