YCA DEPARTMENTS

smithYCA's Education Department is dedicated to increasing each cadet's grade level. Although the opportunity to earn a GED is available at our program, we are not specifically a place to get a GED. Young people who only wish to work toward a GED are encouraged to remain in their hometowns and go to an adult education center. Our staff includes Georgia certified instructors. Each instructor is responsible for one class of approximately 40 cadets per cycle. Classes run from 8:45 to 11:30 A.M., and again from 1:00 to 3:45 P.M., Monday through Friday. The primary goal is to increase cadet's grade level with the opportunity to earn a GED. The secondary goal is to assist cadets with skills that will make them more productive and successful citizens. Currently, a cadet's grade level increase during the five-month stay is approximately four grade levels, giving Georgia the highest rating of all Youth ChalleNGe Programs. We have a 90% pass rate of all the cadets who are allowed to take the GED while at our program. kim

Counseling Department
The Counseling Department at YCA provides personal, academic and career counseling in the form of individual and group therapy. The department is focused on assisting young candiate on how to be successful at YCA along with life making life changes that will enhance their future. Goal Setting, Vocational Exploration and Career Planning are specific areas of focus. Each cadet is assigned a counselor who will help with all of their needs. The counselor-to-cadet ratio is approximately 35-40 cadets per counselor, which is much lower than the average high school. Counselors work closely with instructors, Cadre and other staff members to enhance each cadet's experience. They assist cadets in successful completion of the program to the accomplishment of short-term goals and the realization of long-term goals.
