Military
During the Residential Phase of YCA, cadets learn military style life. They are taught drill and ceremonies, barracks life, American Red Cross CPR/First Aid, Drivers Training, life coping skills, confidence and team building, discipline, and physical fitness -- all in a structured military environment. Cadets are assigned to platoons where they are instructed and supervised by a Cadre. Cadre are retired active duty or National Guard members, or active National Guard Non-Commissioned Officers. All cadre are extremely dedicated to providing a safe environment where cadets are disciplined and learn a variety of military subjects.
The first two weeks of YCA is called "Hardcore." These rigorous weeks are designed to prepare cadets for the Residential Phase. Cadets are taught discipline, drill and ceremonies, physical fitness, barracks life, confidence and team building -- all compacted into 16-hour days. Hardcore is also designed to ensure that each cadet is prepared for the structured lifestyle that will be experienced at YCA. Cadets are supervised 24 hours a day by a Cadre assigned to their platoon.
This provides constant, structured, adult supervision, and limited first-line counseling.
During the entire five-month stay on post, cadets will have a cadre supervising, instructing, teaching, coaching, and counseling them.
